10 Cool Ways to Practice Random Acts of Kindness

February 17th is my birthday, and normally I’d be focusing on ways to celebrate that. (See my “25 Ways to Self-care on Your Birthday” post) It also just happens to be National Random Acts of Kindness Day! I feel pretty blessed to see another trip around the sun, especially with all of the challenges of 2020. I have my health and everything I need, so what better way to celebrate than to focus on some ways to practice kindness to others? I ordered some special gifts for some deserving women in my life, but due to common shipping delays these days, they’ll be getting them a little later. That’s fine since is actually Kindness Week, my intentions and all of your good deeds will count! Here’s a few ideas to celebrate random acts of kindness and brighten someone’s day:

  1. Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.
With our new social distancing lifestyle, a face time, a zoom, or just an old fashioned voice call can make someone’s day.

  2. Send snail mail.
I find receiving a card or letter is so special. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on expensive cards. Plain ones with a hand written note and dried flowers or confetti is a great surprise.

  3. Check in on your neighbors.
Drop off a meal or offer to shop or run errands for your elderly neighbors, especially with this rough winter we’re having.

  4. Treat your mail carrier to a small gift.
A note with a scarf, food gift-card, or box of chocolates is a thoughtful touch. If you have a porch, leaving a basket with snacks and cold drinks for them to help themselves is a great idea as well. They have been working twice as hard through this pandemic.

  5. Treat a friend to flowers or a plant.
If you know me, this is the way to my heart. Guys and girls love plants and flowers.

  6. Pay for the next person in line in the drive through.
I’ll never forget this very kind gesture.

  7. Leave some positive comments on social media.
Be the example. Make social media a more positive space. Spend 15 minutes a day commenting something nice or uplifting on random posts.

  8. Help the hungry or homeless.
Donate or volunteer at a pantry or shelter. Community fridges are great ways to help now with all the food insecurity.

  9. Go out of your way to give positive feedback for an employee that’s helped you.
It’s really easy to complain about poor service. But think about the impact of going out of your way to give positive feedback when you received excellent service. It can mean so much.

  10. Practice self-care.
Treat yourself well. Get rest, eat well and unplug. It’s beneficial to you and your immediate circle. You can give more to others when your cup is replenished.
