Natural Remedies to Help Sinus Pressure and Headaches
The autumn equinox often brings me sinus issues. Changes in the barometric pressure, dry apartment heat, and allergens due to changing seasons, can lead to these headaches that do not go away with simple ibuprofen. Antihistamines and nasal sprays are a go to when they flare up, but here are some home remedies that offer a more homeopathic way for me to fight sinus pressure and headaches.
1 Turmeric, Ginger & Cayenne
Turmeric and ginger are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Cayenne improves circulation Brewing turmeric, ginger and cayenne together will help relieve that sinus pressure every time. There’s so many other benefits that I’m not listing. I’ve had this mixture in a juice, and a wellness shot from Pressed Juicery, and also as a hot tea. All are great. You can also brew it yourself at home, but whatever you do, don’t sleep on this home remedy!
2 Natural Oils
There are a few natural oils that help with sinuses. My favorites are peppermint, lavender and eucalyptus. If I’m going to the sauna, I put a few drops in my towel and breathe in deeply. Diffusing oils around my home, especially at night, also help soothe me and aid in sinus pressure. Natural oils are known to reduce inflammation, fight bacteria and relieve pain.
3. Peace and Rest!
Try to get a good nights sleep and some naps in there too. When my sinuses are particularly annoying, it’s a good time for me to take a day off and relax. Be kind to yourself.
4. Steam Baths
OK. This is a super bonus. You can take a basic plain hot bath, but why be basic? I discovered the Saje Wellness “Fortify Warmth Bath Soak” OMG what a game changer! The key ingredients are peppermint, rosemary and eucalyptus. But there’s some other hidden gems in there like tea tree oil, geranium and cinnamon. This soak will help most definitely help with opening up your sinuses. I ran a hot bath and added two teaspoons of the fortify bath mixture. I took it up a notch and added Himalayan bath salts and dried rose petals for added calmness and ultimate relaxation. After soaking for about 20 minutes, I felt amazing! My body was almost tingling afterwards. I couldn’t do anything but relax and go to sleep. Not sponsored, but I highly recommend!
5. Hydrate
I struggle with this one. Quite often, it’s the heat that’s starting to pump up, especially in New York City apartments, that can dry you out and lead to nosebleeds and other sinus problems. Drinking plenty of water and natural juices helps loosen up the mucus membranes. Drink, and if you think you’re drinking enough, drink more.
6. Avoid Dairy Products
I’m not anti-milk. I’m actually pro-milk. I love ice cream and coffee creamer. But it can make you.. well, phlemy and sounding like Fat Albert. I can’t do the nut- based milks due to a allergy, and, does anyone really enjoy soy milk? I just cut back when my sinus are flared up. I started using oat milk in my coffee. It really isn’t that bad.
7. Neti Pot
I pull this out when my sinuses are particularly bad. It’s not my favorite thing in the world, but it’s been around forever and it works. Saline washes are essential if you have sinus congestion and this is a proven effective way to clear it. It also helps to clear your nasal passages before you take an over the counter nasal spray as well.
