Creating Beautiful Low-Cost Flower Arrangements

It’s the weekend, and one of my self-care rituals that I practice faithfully, is creating fresh flowers arrangements in my home. Almost every girl loves flowers, but I decided a long time ago that I wouldn’t wait for anyone to buy them for me. That being said, buying flowers often could get a little pricey. I like to save my coin, so I look for flowers that are low cost, but give a high impact and last a while. This allows me to continuously have something fresh cut in my home. I love all flowers, but when it comes to being cost conscious, I depend on a few favorites. Here’s a round-up:

  1. Alstroemerias

I have to admit that I slept on this Peruvian Dwarf Lily for a while. When looking at in the store it’s a little deceptive. It really looks like a bunch of leaves. But when you place them in a vase, the flowers start to open, and it seemingly swells to perfection. They’re gorgeous. They come in lovely shades of yellows and pinks. They are a reliable bouquet that lasts a good two weeks minimum with a water change, a little flower food and a new trim of the ends. (I use the florist packets, or a little sugar or even a splash of Sprite.) It’s the best 5.99 I can spend every two weeks.

2. Stock Flowers

I can count on Trader Joe’s to have a flower bunch for 3.99 that will make your jaw drop. I had no idea what these even were. It’s apparently a ruffled cousin of the carnation. Fluff these hearty stems up in a vase of water and watch them fill out to an impressive display. The vibrant colors or even the creamy white colors of the stock flower or “ Gillyflower,” is an easy way to add an interesting and eye catching bouquet. I have had some last for over a week, and some that have shed a bit in a few days. Either way, for the price and impact you can’t beat it. I’m hooked.

3. Sunflowers

Big, bold and beautiful. Sunflowers can make an impact with a large bunch, or just a few stems. These are petite sunflowers, and for 9.99 they bring so much joy to my apartment when the light hits them.

4. Carnations

Do not sleep on carnations! They’re definitely a budget buy at $3-5 a bunch, and that’s the beauty. The trick is to get creative with the display. Get different colors and create interesting bouquets. You can cut them asymmetrically, and cascade them, create ombré effects or even dye white ones. They’re guaranteed to last a good while, if you treat them right with a little food and water change every few days.

5. Chrysanthemums

Also affectionately called “mums,” this is a popular flower that you often see in flower boxes or porches. I feel the best wow factor is to bunch a lot of them together. They’re simple but beautiful, and add to your table without being too distracting. They’re usually about $5 a bunch so you can buy a couple and make several small displays or group them all together in an interesting vessel. They usually last at least a week, sometimes up to two and a half.
